“This encourages students to learn through critical thinking rather than just having me transmit information to them. They also learn how to work as a team, skills they'll use in work settings.” - Natural Sciences Professor Cheryl Coolidge

The Cleveland Colby Colgate Archives would like to thank Trustee Martha Ware (Colby Junior College, Class of 1937), Doris Neilson Sheets (Class of 1937), Jean London, Margaret Cawley, and Harold Currier for their generous donations to this collection.
It is known from Centennial Committee records in the Archives that at a set of Wedgwoodware, available in mulberry or Staffordshire blue, was offered by the Friends of the Library to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Colby Junior College. These pieces were made in England by Etruria & Bariaston and imported by Jones, McDuffee & Stratton of Boston, Massachusetts. A complete set of twelve (tea plates, teacups, and saucers) cost a total of $27.00, not including shipping and handling. Proceeds from the sale of these items were put into the Library Endowment Fund. The first twenty-five dozen tea plates were imprinted with a special first edition backstamp representing a cupola. All of the tea plates in this collection carry that stamp.
Colgate Hall and the Colby Junior College seal, surrounded by a floral design in cartouche form is the pattern on the teacups. The nine-inch diameter luncheon plates contain Wedgwood's Landscape border, and according to the order form, the Old Academy Building. Some plates in the collection, however, have Colgate or Colby Hall on them rather than the Academy. To date, no documentation has been uncovered that suggests that either the Academy design was changed after the printing of the order forms, or that an alternate Colgate or Colby pattern was introduced at a later time.
This collection was assembled into its present form by the Cleveland Colby Colgate Archives from donations, transfers, or purchases of individual items. The collection consists of ninety-six pieces of Wedgwoodware, with representation of both colors available (mulberry and Staffordshire blue) in 1937.
