internships and careers

Learning On Campus…And Off

At Colby-Sawyer, 100 percent of students complete at least one internship and gain work experience before graduating. Media Studies majors are required to complete either an off-campus internship or a college praxis in which they assume leadership roles in campus media.

In consultation with faculty, students select and apply for internships which best match their acquired knowledge of media studies and their skills and interests. During their required senior-year internship, students gain intensive practical work experience and valuable professional contacts. In the past, students have interned both in the U.S. and abroad with:

  • radio and television stations

  • public relations firms and advertising agencies

  • newspapers

  • communications departments of hospitals, companies, government agencies, sports teams and more

Students work under the supervision of both an on-the-job supervisor and a faculty member. A public presentation based on the internship is given after its conclusion.

Careers in Communication

Graduates who major in Media Studies are prepared for careers anywhere in the world. Our alumni have obtained positions at television stations as media managers, directors and production assistants; written for FOX Sports, Time-Warner TV News and MTV. Some have become reporters and editors for newspapers while others have taken marketing positions in entertainment promotion companies, museums and major department stores.

One recent Media Studies major taught English in Korea. Another is pursuing an acting career and has appeared in theater productions at the Williamstown Theatre as well as in national TV commercials and a prime-time television series. Those desiring to pursue more education have enrolled in prestigious graduate programs in communications and business.

Harrington Center for Career and Academic Advising
