Swamp Dewberry Rubus hispidus
Rose Rosaceae family
Leaves generally glossy, 3-7" semi-evergreen, but often seen with reddish hues. Usually three fan-compund leaflets with blunt toothed edges.
Flowers/Fruit: Small white flowers with five rounded petals. Like common dewberry, the fruit is black when ripe, but swamp dewberry has a distinctly sour taste.
Bark: The twig is bright red, slender and armed with fine, bristly teeth.
Form/Habitat: A trailing shrub found prostrate in stream margins, wet meadows, and moist woods. Height to 12" flowers June-Sept.
