Leaves:Leaves vary from plant to plant but are alternate, simple, petioled, and serrate.

Flowers/Fruit: Flowers are white or pink, in short, often leafy-bracted, terminal racemes, sometimes appear before leaves. Fruit of all species is edible. Turns from pink or red to purple or black. Bloom April-May.

Buds: Twisted; slender and pinkish with dark tipped scales; solitary and elongated.
Bark: Tight and dark with distinctive vertical lines.
Form/Habitat:Small trees or shrubs up to 30 ft. tall. Grows in clumps and berries are used to make jams and pies. Habitat is dry to moist thickets, borders of woods, clearings; often at the edge of wetlands or stream banks.

Identification: This is a large and confusing genus; there is considerable difference of opinion concerning the various species.
