Anup Nepal '11, a Business Administration major from Nepal, is president of the Colby-Sawyer College Chapter of Students in Free Enterprises (SIFE). He and fellow SIFE members took first place in their league in the 2011 Regional Competition in New York City in April 2011. The Colby-Sawyer team edged out those from Loyola University, East Stroudsburg University and Delaware Valley College with an impressive presentation and rigorous preparation for the event. This victory for the Colby-Sawyer SIFE team earned them a spot at the National SIFE Competition in Minneapolis in May 2011.
It has been a great year, especially for me to end my college career, says SIFE President Anup Nepal. I would also like to thank the college for its strong support of SIFE over the years.
What is the mission and purpose of SIFE? What kind of events does this club host?
SIFE has many goals: To promote the idea of free enterprise on campus; to encourage students from all fields of study to feel comfortable learning to work together in teams; to give the students of different backgrounds the experience and skills to succeed in their later careers; and to engage the students to build positive relationships with the community and increase the awareness of residence citizenship.
Why did you get involved and seek a leadership role?
I have always been interested in business-related activities that could influence people. At the end of my freshman year, I heard about SIFE from seniors and wanted to be involved in the organization to increase my knowledge. I believe leadership positions enhance my ability to contribute and participate efficiently. So, I was vice-president for two years and now am president.
How does this club complement your academic studies?
I am a Business Administration major, so SIFE is a great platform to apply my knowledge and skills gained over the period of time through my academic studies.
What does being part of this group do for you personally?
I'm part of a good circle of friends who are dedicated and enthusiastic about accomplishing SIFE's mission with their knowledge. It also helps me to develop skills such as working in a group, accomplishing tasks on time and developing professionalism. When everyone in the group is working hard before the competition (presentation) we help each other to complete tasks with efficiency and perfection.
How many members does this club have?
We have 23 active members who regularly attend our weekly meetings. It has increased significantly this year.
What goals do you have for this club?
To follow the given purposes of SIFE and help each member of the society in the long run.
Who should join this club, and why is it important to the college community?
Any Colby-Sawyer student regardless of major could join this club because it builds fundamental skills for lifelong learning. As SIFE is growing significantly with the activities it is performing on-campus, it is really important for everyone to step up and develop that extra cutting edge in their college career.
