The Environmental Studies Department builds on the strengths of two types of students who share a common passion: For those whose interest in the environment has a more scientific focus, there is the Environmental Science Program. Those with a more interdisciplinary interest in the environment will feel at home in the Environmental Studies Program.

The two majors start with a common foundation of core courses before diverging and then rejoining to share the community-based research project and Capstone courses.

Both programs feature a professional focus and provide students with the skills they need to move directly from college into the work force. The programs also prepare students for graduate study in law and any number of fields.

In both programs, students develop a sense and vision of nature while exploring the world's natural communities – be they desert or river, across the globe or as near as the forest surrounding campus – and gain greater understanding of the environmental issues and changes we all face as inhabitants of one small planet.

The Environmental Studies Department was recognized with substantial support from the National Science Foundation to expand student learning and research opportunities. Nationally, only 3 percent of Environmental Studies and Sciences programs are as interdisciplinary as those at Colby-Sawyer College.
