The Environmental Studies Department builds on the strengths of two very different types of students who share a common passion: for those whose interest in the environment has a more scientific focus, there is the Environmental Science Program. Those with a more interdisciplinary interest in the environment will feel at home in the Environmental Studies Program. Students in both majors start with a common foundation of core courses before diverging and later rejoining to share the community-based Research project and Capstone courses.

Both programs feature a preprofessional focus and provide students with the skills they need to move directly from college into the work force. The programs also prepare students for graduate study in a number of fields.

In both programs, students develop a sense and vision of nature while exploring the world's natural communities – be they desert or river, across the globe or as near as the forest surrounding campus – and gain greater understanding of the environmental issues and changes we all face as inhabitants of one small planet.

Nationally, only 3 percent of Environmental Studies and Sciences programs are as interdisciplinary as those at Colby-Sawyer College.
