Update from the President
Despite the economic challenges facing our country, I am pleased to say that Colby-Sawyer College is weathering the storm with gusto. In no small part this is due to the generosity and dedication of our alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends. Thanks to you, Colby-Sawyer has had a successful fund-raising year and is positioned to continue to respond to student needs and to expand educational offerings. I am truly proud to share a few recent accomplishments with you, and to thank you for helping to make this success possible.
Fund-raising Strong 2008-2009 fund-raising results with overall giving totaling $6.2 million, a $600,000 increase over the prior year. The Annual Fund closed at $1,619,048, a $17,000 increase over 2008.
Enrollment For the third year in a row, we will welcome a record large first-year class in September. Overall enrollment will be just over 1,100 students.
Academics After adding new majors in Creative Writing, Art History and Environmental Science last year, this year we are adding a Health Studies major. We are also launching the Global Beginnings Program, sending students for a semester of study to France and Italy with programs led by our own faculty.
Athletics Nineteen Colby-Sawyer scholar-athletes were named to the Academic All-Conference Team of The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC). The Men's Ski Team won the first National Championship in its history. Not to be outdone, Sophomore Danielle Shannon won the individual Giant Slalom National Championship, earning her First Team All-American accolades.
Campus Buildings This summer Austin Hall is being thoroughly renovated, additional living spaces have been added to Lawson and Danforth Halls, and we are preparing to begin construction on a new building to house the Windy Hill School.
These results are possible because you believe and invest in Colby-Sawyer. In these difficult financial times, let me assure you that your investment is a prudent one, having an immediate impact on our students.
Thank you, and we hope to see you on campus soon.
Thomas C. Galligan Jr.
President and Professor of Humanities
