My Colby-Sawyer Experience Art and Essay Contest Winners Announced
Share your distinctive Colby-Sawyer Experience in an original, creative way that was the challenge issued to all currently enrolled students, and they answered in words, images and even clay.
Six students have won prizes in the My Colby-Sawyer Experience Art and Essay Contest. Their art work and essays will be published in Currents and in the Colby-Sawyer College Alumni Magazine.
Winners of the art contest are Derek Veilleux, who won first prize for a watercolor painting depicting Colgate Hall; Anthony Marrone, whose ceramic pot took second place; and Brittany Courey, whose abstract painting was awarded third place.
Marrone says his entry reflects his Colby-Sawyer experience in a variety of ways. "On the metaphorical level, this particular piece captures the experience I have had here through the pattern of webbing on the outside," he says. "With such a small, intimate campus, I have found that many aspects of my learning here are connected as a web. Everyone knows everyone and people are always friendly. Any problem I run into is solved with quick answers from caring people, who often know exactly where to go or who to talk to concerning that issue. I feel that Spider Pot demonstrates my Colby-Sawyer experience by showing my learned abilities as a growing artist and my feelings toward this campus."
In the essay contest, Meaghan Fligg took first prize, Erin Bancroft second, and Jaycee McCarthy third place.
Fligg shares the importance of the family she found on Kelsey Field, and how the members of her soccer team helped her cope with a family crisis off the field. Bancroft, a senior, recalls her first visit to campus and the instant attraction she felt to the college, and all that has transpired since. McCarthy, an Admissions tour guide, looks at the big picture made up of tiny moments that comprise his Colby-Sawyer Experience, and wonders what each day will add to it.
In both the art and essay contests, first place commanded a $300 prize, second place, $200, and third place, $100.
The contest was sponsored by the Offices of College Communications and Publications.
