The Studio Potter Collection Opens with a Surprise

A large crowd of students, faculty and ceramics enthusiasts from the town and region enjoyed the opening of The Studio Potter Collection at the Marian Graves Mugar Gallery on Thursday, Sept. 14.

Co-curator of the show Prof. Jon Keenan introduced legendary potter and editor Gerry Williams, who spoke about the collection's origins and read moving excerpts from interviews he conducted with two of the show's contributing artists.

President Thomas C. Galligan Jr. described the show as "possibly the most important exhibition of ceramics on view in the country at this moment." Art students and gallery assistants surprised Keenan, whose birthday coincided with the event, with a birthday cake "in the shape of a pot."

Dashers and Strollers Enjoy Fine Fall Weather

President Galligan, an avid runner who is already a familiar early morning sight on the by-ways of New London, kicked off a new Colby-Sawyer tradition on Sept. 16. The first annual Colby-Sawyer College Community 5K Dash and Stroll brought together well over a hundred fellow enthusiasts of all ages from the campus, town and surrounding communites.

Dash & Stroll registrants received T-shirts and followed a 5- kilometer course through the Colby-Sawyer campus and the streets of New London. After a week of rain, New England's weather cooperated with a fine early fall morning with mild temperatures.

Though the race was non-competitive, senior Andrew Snow crossed the finish line first, completing the course in 19 minutes and 18 seconds. The ESS major was running the course for this second time that morning. Brandon Baker '09 finished the run soon after.
