VOX aims to give voice to females
A new club stands up to become the voice for women at Colby-Sawyer College.
President of the club, sophomore Abigail Ferris recently began VOX, which means “voice” in Latin. This club works to further women’s rights and prove that everyone has a voice. Ferris explains, “We think everyone deserves a voice and to have it be heard.”
VOX works not only to have voices heard but to make a difference. March 2 VOX is holding a two-hour Zumba session to benefit Camfed, an organization that raises money for African girls’ education. Each person who comes to participate in this event must donate $5 to the organization.
Ferris started this club to make changes. She states, “We are really trying to make a difference on campus and in the community to raise awareness on what’s going on around us…and how being safe during sexual behavior or involvement is huge.”
Thus far, VOX performed three dorm storms, an activity where VOX members storm into dorms and knock upon random doors to give away goody-bags. These goody-bags hold condoms, candy, coasters, nail files, sticky notes, pens and positive notes.
Planned Parenthood supports VOX on this initiative by providing the club with items for the goody-bags, as well as providing them with novelty items that the club needs for their activities and events.
Alongside Ferris, six board members and five other members are attending VOX’s meetings thus far. VOX is looking for more members to help the cause.
VOX meets every Tuesday at 5 p.m. in Colgate 220. Anyone who is interested in joining may contact Ferris at firstname.lastname@example.org
