The annual 5k Road Race/Fun Walk, sponsored by the Exercise and Sport Sciences Majors Club kicked of this past Saturday, April 19. The race was an overwhelming success as scores of runners and walkers alike signed up to participate. Crowds of people gathered at the starting line as people of all ages set out to conquer the 3.1-mile course circling Colby-Sawyer’s campus.
Freshman Nick Chouramanis, an ESS Club member and volunteer for the race, described the event as,” A way to give back to the community and get people involved while raising money to help the Exercise and Sports Sciences Club.
Separated into 14 categories by age, each first place winner was given the opportunity to pick a prize gift card from a New London area business. The winners in the 14 categories include, CSC President Thomas Galligan, Jean Eckrich, Amy Scherman, Mke Heffernan, Lisa Wilson, Josh Stefan, Patrick O’Brien, Linda Heffernan, David Reynolds, Caitlin Austin, Grant Sauerwein, Dave Sauerwein, Sophie Shields, and Jen Sauerwein.
Winner of the male (18-28) runners, Patrick O’Brien commented, “ The race was difficult, but I thought it was really fun. I had never ran a 5k, so I didn’t know how long it was going to be, I didn’t know the route, but I started off slow and picked up pace. When I started passing people it became really fun.”
