My Colby-Sawyer Experience

“The changes I experienced moving from the Historic South to a college in Northern New England were not the only changes I experienced in the first-year Pathway seminar.”

new student trip

This exciting program, sponsored by the Office of Recreational Sports, will take place August 17-23, 2008, three weeks before the traditional New Student Orientation program. This trip is designed to aid first year students in their transition to campus life. New students are grouped with 10 classmates, upper-class student leaders, and a variety of faculty and staff members for a week of fun and adventure in the outdoors. This trip will also provide an ideal environment to develop lasting friendships and shared experiences.

Every day, each group will venture out on a different trip. The following is a sample schedule of the week:

Day 1

  • 1:30-2:30 p.m. Students arrive at Colby-Sawyer College
  • 2:30-3:30 p.m. Introductory activities for new students, faculty, staff, and student leaders
  • 3:30 p.m. Vans depart for Eagle Pond Lodge, Danbury, NH
  • Evening Dinner and campfire

Day 2 - Day 5

Each group will participate in the following experiences on a daily rotation:

  • hiking in the White Mountains
  • group dynamics using a low ropes course at Eagle Pond
  • canoeing on the Merrimack River
  • cycling in and around the New London area

At the end of the four days, the students will have shared common experiences, but have the unique experience of their group. At night, everyone will be back at Eagle Pond Lodge and Conference Center, a beautiful lakefront facility in nearby Danbury, New Hampshire.

Day 6

On the last day, everyone will hike to the Lakes in the Clouds Hut on Mt. Washington. Students will climb in groups at their own pace, but everyone will meet at the hut. This provides a culminating experience - an accomplishment - for all involved.

Members of the Campus Safety staff will be waiting to serve the entire hungry group a BBQ style meal at a picnic area near the base of the mountain.

Day 7

  • 10:00 a.m. Vans return students to Colby-Sawyer College
  • 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. Students depart or are picked up from the campus.
The cost to participate in the New Student Trip is $300. This price includes lodging, all trips, and all meals.

Participation in this program is limited to 40 new students and reservations will be made on a first-come, first-served basis. Check your mailboxes this spring for the 2008 New Student Trip brochure or pick one up at the Accepted Students Open House April 11th or 18th.
