Nominations for the Student Commencement Speaker (Spring 2009)

Awarded To A Member of the Graduating Class
Invited to Submit Nominations Graduating Students, Faculty, and Staff Members
Deadline Friday, February 27, 2009

Please take a few minutes to nominate a student to give this year's student commencement address.

This is an important award and will be conferred at the Scholars and Leaders Reception and Awards Ceremony on April 28, 2009. One student will be selected and presented with a medallion to wear at Commencement and will give a Commencement address.

Nominations for the award are requested from faculty, staff and senior students. Please note that nominators are asked to think about the following criteria:

  • matching the character of the graduating class;
  • the theme;
  • inspirational and engaging material;
  • appropriateness to Commencement;
  • public speaking abilities; and
  • representing the college's values and outcomes.

The selection committee is comprised of two senior class officers (in the event that senior class officers have submitted speeches, two other members of the senior class will be invited to serve on this committee) senior class advisor, the previous year's Nancy Beyer Opler Award for Excellence in Advising award recipient, the academic dean, and the vice president for Student Development and dean of students.

Students will be notified of their nomination and the theme for Commencement. The theme for this year's Commencement speech is, "Making Connections." This was the fall orientation theme for this class when they entered Colby-Sawyer. Students nominated will be asked to submit a draft address to the selection committee. A blind review of each address submitted by all candidates will be made by the selection committee.
