Chargers Drop Season Opener to Wellesley
WELLESLEY, MA – Sophomore sensation Haley Geller (Berkeley, CA) scored nine goals as the Wellesley College lacrosse team downed Colby-Sawyer 23-4 in Saturday afternoon's pouring rain. The game was the season opener for both teams.
Wellesley struck early and often, opening play with a 4-0 lead off of two goals from Geller and a goal apiece from Catherine Schaefer (Coxsackie, NY) and captain Amber Evans (Worthington, OH). Colby-Sawyer got on the board at the 20 minute-mark with a score from Tara Stewart that cut the Wellesley lead to 4-1.
The Blue responded with six-straight goals to open up a 10-1 lead. During the run, Geller added three scores, Schaefer picked up two more and Colette Whitaker (Great Falls, VA) picked up her first of the afternoon.
The Chargers picked up the slack with back-to-back goals from Stewart and Deb MacEachern at 10:56 and 9:30, but Wellesley closed out the first half with five straight scores, including four goals over the final two minutes of the half. Geller scored twice in that stretch while Molly Morrow (Bow, NH) and Caitlin Meeker (Columbia, MD) also scored to give the Blue a 15-3 lead at the break.
In the second period, Evans scored Wellesley's first two goals to push the lead to 17-3 with 26 minutes to play. Colby-Sawyer's Hannah Cullen brought the lead back down to 17-4, but Wellesley scored the finals six goals of the game to wrap up the 23-4 win.
Geller led all scorers with 10 points on nine goals and one assist. Evans finished with four points on three goals and an assist while Schaefer and Jenny Holland (Bethesda, MD) each added a hat-trick. Whitaker picked up two goals and one assist while Loretta White (Northampton, MA), Morrow, and Meeker rounded out the scoring for Wellesley with a goal each. Briana Roberge (Bow, NH) added an assist.
In goal for Wellesley, Kristen Jaroncyzk (Manhasset, NY) picked up five saves.
