NEW LONDON, N.H. October 4, 2008 Senior Doug Currie (Harvard, Mass.) recorded one of his best matches in his career by tallying three goals in the first half to lead the Chargers over the Pride of Regis, 7-0. With the win the Chargers improve their conference record to 2-3, while the newly established Pride fall to 0-6 in TCCC play. The combination of Will Berry (Berlin, Vt.), Chris Feltes (Manchester, N.H.), T.J. Doherty (East Granby, Conn.), and Eric Caples (Billerica, Mass.) earned the shutout.
Currie's first goal of the afternoon came off a cross from Andrew Popp (Marlborough, Mass.) down the right flank as he touched it into the right corner of the net in the 5th minute. Just over a minute later, Currie made it a two goal advantage for the Chargers as he cleaned up a rebound off the crossbar and found the back of the net. Sophomore Doug McLaughlin (Derry, N.H.) hit a perfect through ball to Currie in the 28th minute. Currie did the rest as he blasted the ball past the keeper to complete his hat trick. Exactly a minute later, senior Ryan Oldfield (Raymond, N.H.) got into the scoring act as he headed a brilliant cross from Justin Varney (Belfast, Maine) pass the Regis goalkeeper.
The Chargers kept putting the pressure on the Pride and their goalkeeper Andrew LaMacchia (Lynn, Mass.) in the second half, who finished the day with 12 saves. Freshman Kevin Coyle (Bradford, N.H.) netted his first collegiate goal as he volleyed a cross from senior Brian Doucette (Boxford, Mass) past LaMacchia in the 59th minute. During the 71st minute of play, freshman Brian Lombard (Ipswich, Mass.) sent a bending ball into the box, which was flicked by the head of Tucker Cohen (Marblehead, Mass) to Max Williams (Ipswich, Mass.) who placed the ball into the corner of the net for his first goal of the season.
The prettiest goal of the match came when sophomore Travis Provost (Stratham, N.H.) scored his first career goal on a brilliant diving head off a perfectly placed corner kick from Brian Empoliti (Pembroke, Mass.) into the side of the net.
The Chargers will look to make it two in a row when they host the Golden Bears of Western New England on Wednesday, October 8 at 3:30pm.
