Jim Broughton has served as head coach of the Colby-Sawyer baseball program for each of the 14 seasons of the team's existence, leading the Chargers to a 191 all-time wins.
Under his direction, the Chargers captured The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) titles in 1998 and 1999 and were the runners-up in 2000. He was TCCC Coach of the Year in both of the championship years and took the 1999 squad to the ECAC Division III New England Tournament.
Coach Broughton came to New London following two seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Southern Maine. He was a four-year starter for the Huskies and an All-American in both 1991 and 1992. His teams made three trips to the NCAA Division III College World Series, winning the national championship in 1991. He graduated from Southern Maine in 1992 with a Bachelor of Arts in history, while minoring in elementary education.
In the fall of 2003, Coach Broughton was inducted into the University of Southern Maine's Hall of Fame for his efforts on the baseball field. He still ranks in the top 15 in several offensive categories including games played, at bats, runs scored, hits, doubles, triples, runs batted in, total bases, walks and stolen bases.
