Montreal is a place where happiness and contentment come easily. The “joie de vivre” is palpable and contagious in this vibrant and cosmopolitan city of two million inhabitants. The diversity and the richness of its fi ne cuisine, its large, abundant green spaces, and its respect for the environment produce an exceptional quality of life, recognized unanimously by residents and visitors alike. Warm, welcoming, gourmet, and sophisticated -- Montreal has it all. I hope you'll join me and discover its many attractions!

Sincerely,
Bert Yarborough

This morning our guide will tell us all about the city from the days of Fort Ville-Marie to the Montréal of today. As we discover the most important streets, landmarks, and stories of the second largest French-speaking metropolis, we'll experience what makes Montréal so unique! After lunch we visit Pointe-à-Callière, the Montréal Museum of Archaeology and History which was opened in 1992 as part of celebrations to mark Montréal's 350th birthday. Set on the very birthplace of the city, the Museum is a major attraction in Old Montréal. It is a recognized national historic and archaeological site, a historic ensemble whose sites, buildings and collections form a unique cultural complex showcasing some of the tangible traces of the city's past. Enjoy time on your own this evening – perhaps dinner with some of your fellow alumni.

Our destination this morning is the Montreal Museum Of Fine Arts. Founded in 1860, it was one of the fi rst museums in North America to amass an encyclopedic collection worthy of the name. Since then, its holdings have grown to almost 36,000 objects – paintings, sculptures, works on paper, prints and drawings, photographs and decorative art objects – from Antiquity to today. Year after year, the Museum continues to acquire new works to enrich its collections of Ancient Cultures, European Art, Canadian Art, Inuit and Amerindian Art, Contemporary Art and Decorative Arts. Professor Yarborough will discuss works in some of the collections during our visit. The afternoon is yours to explore the melange of shops and restaurants that the city has to offer.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 16

Today we visit the Biodome and the Montreal Botanical Garden. The word Biodome comes from the Greek words bios, or life, and domos, house. An oasis in the heart of the city, the Montreal Biodome recreates some of the most beautiful ecosystems of the Americas: the lush and humid Tropical Rainforest, warm even in the depths of a Montreal winter; the Laurentian Maple Forest, changing with the seasons; the Gulf of St. Lawrence; the Labrador Coast; and the Sub-Antarctic Islands. Next we're off to the Botanical Garden, offering a world of colors and fragrances for visitors to enjoy. With its collection of 22,000 plant species and cultivars, 10 exhibition greenhouses, some thirty thematic gardens, and teams of researchers and activities staff, the Montréal Botanical Garden ranks as one of the world's largest and most spectacular botanical gardens. No matter what the season, visitors to the Montréal Botanical Garden are sure to be captivated by the colors and fragrances from around the world as they wander from the delightful Chinese Garden to the heart of the Sonoran desert, from the peaceful oasis of the Japanese Garden to the classically designed French garden or the woodlands of the Laurentians. After lunch you are free for the rest of the day. This evening we celebrate our Montreal journey at a wonderful farewell dinner.
