young alumni achievement award

Presented each year at Alumni Fall Festival, this award recognizes a young alumna/us for significant achievement and contribution within her/his chosen field and community. Eligible nominees should reflect positively on Colby-Sawyer while providing an example of leadership and inspiration to young alumni. Alumni of the last 15 years, 1996-2010 for the 2011 award, are eligible for this award.

2012 Award Recipient: Mike Mooney '02

Mike currently serves as the General Manager for PolyRecovery, a premier plastics recycling and processing company, which is owned by his classmate, John Pelech '02.

Film is a true passion for Mike, and in 2009 he co-founded Hammer & Saw Films with another fellow alumna, Will Peters '06. Professor of Communications Studies Donna Berghorn recalls, "Mike not only returned to campus to present the film "Motel" to our students, he proposed the idea of creating on campus The Windcrossing film Festival in honor of the late Professor Don Coonley. This was a joint film-making venture where alumni filmmakers return to campus to make films with our students. Last year he spent many long hours casting, rehearsing, shooting and promoting the first of our collaborative projects, which are currently being shown at four national film festivals. His tireless patience walking students through every step of the filmmaking process has contributed valuably to their learning and their CSC experience."

Mike can also be found serving as a guest lecturer in our classrooms and serving on alumni panels. He is a mentor and inspiration to today's Colby-Sawyer students, and we thank him for his loyalty to the college.
