Presented each year at Alumni Fall Festival, the Alumni Service Award recognizes an alumna/us who has made outstanding volunteer service contributions to Colby-Sawyer and to the public on either a local, national or international level.
2010 Award Recipient: Ann Hoar Floyd '60
Ann graduated from then Colby Junior College with a degree in medical technology in 1961, and returned to receive her bachelor's degree in 1977. She has lived on Martha's Vineyard for the past 20 years and runs her own real estate company, Sandcastle Realty, an exclusive vacation rental company.
Active and a leader in her community, Ann servse in various capacities on a number of boards -- public, private and non-profit -- including the Farm Institute, the Edgartown board of Health, Trustees of the Reservation, the Martha's Vineyard Land Advisory Board and the Longhill Assisted Living Advisory Board. Ann is currently a member of the Board of Directors for the Martha's Vineyard Chamber of Commerce. Impressively, she was chosen as one of 20 participants to serve on the steering committee of The Island Plan, a 50 year plan to protect and ensure the vitality of Martha's Vineyard. She also serves on the emergency team for the local Red Cross and was a former foster parent for teenagers in need.
Ann has been a member of the President's Alumni Advisory Council since the group's inception in 2005. A few years ago at one of those meetings Ann learned about the college's two field studies courses: Desert Communities and River Communities. It didn't take long for her to suggest a Marine Communities program on her beloved Martha's Vineyard. Her proposal was enthusiastically adopted and the first session was held a year ago, with 11 CSC students and two faculty members spending two long weekends on the island, studying the flora, fauna, and shellfish farming.
