What Women Want NOW: The New Hampshire Women's Caucus...
Last spring Joan Lambert led a course for Adventures in Learning entitled Empowering Women across the World. Now Colby-Sawyer College is hosting a women's caucus on Saturday, November 12 addressing in depth many of the issues which Joan touched on in her thought provoking course.
An anticipated 300 participants will convene at Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday, November 12, 2011 to focus on women in the economy, women and health care, and global women's issues. The issues of women's educational, economic, legal and social equity have been on the table for decades. So what's important about this conference? The fact is that the merits of these issues are still being debated in the 21st century! The aim of the conference planners is to put them at the forefront of the political debate during the 2012 national primaries and elections.
Pulitzer Prize winner Sheryl WuDunn, co-author with her husband Nicholas Kristof of the best-selling book, Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, will deliver the keynote address.
The Caucus will begin with three consecutive panel discussions on each of these areas. Each panel will consist of three expert speakers, who will present and advocate for specific issues, followed by a question and answer period. In the lunch and caucus session, participants will discuss and vote for the issues within each topic that they believe are most critical and can be addressed most effectively through collective engagement and action. The results of the vote will be presented as the Caucus Platform prior to the keynote address.
Three afternoon workshops will provide a toolkit to help participants bring about positive changes for women in their local communities, in the national discourse and politics, and in the global community. These instructive, interactive sessions will highlight ways to create awareness, build community and inspire collective action aimed at societal engagement and change. The sessions will focus on creating change through the use of traditional and social media, collaboration with community-based and non-profit organizations, and participation in legislative processes as well as governmental and political organizations.
If you are interested in issues affecting women's educational, economic, legal and social equity here and abroad you'll want to register for this major college event. Regular admission is $50; rates for students and for the keynote address only are also available. For more information, click on the following link: www.colby-sawyer.edu/nhwomenscaucus
