“The changes I experienced moving from the Historic South to a college in Northern New England were not the only changes I experienced in the first-year Pathway seminar.”

Global Beginnings is a first semester freshmen study abroad program, designed for students seeking international travel and cultural exploration. This adventurous program combines the traditional Colby-Sawyer educational experience, as classes are taught by accompanying Colby-Sawyer professors, with the benefits of cultural immersion.
Life in Florence begins with an orientation that includes a welcome dinner, an introduction to the local area, and workshops on travel, safety and cultural differences. Students live like the Italians in Florence apartments with cooking facilities and three to five other Colby-Sawyer roommates. Classes are within walking distance and are taught by an accompanying Colby-Sawyer professor, as well as local faculty who teach courses on Italian Culture and Language, and Art History. Other social and cultural activities include walking tours, traditional cooking classes, museum visits, an excursion to Sienna, and optional trips to Rome, Venice and other destinations.
Students travel to their home away from home at the beautiful Chateau de Pourtales, a 250 year old castle in Strasbourg. Here students stay and take classes for the semester, taught by the accompanying Colby-Sawyer professor and by local faculty. Guest lectures and regular cultural trips to European Parliament, European Court of Human Rights, and tours of local art and history museums are all a part of the activities for Global Beginnings students. During an extended visit to Paris, students are guided through the city by foot and boat, visit Parisian museums, and have classes in French Culture and Language.
Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis for sixty Global Beginnings students. Early registration is recommended.
Students from any major can participate, with the exception of Nursing majors. Additionally, varsity athletes may miss their first season if they choose to participate. All participants must be 18 years of age by September 1, 2010.
The cost of Global Beginnings, including travel, is equivalent to an on-campus semester at Colby-Sawyer. Each participant's financial aid award and scholarship package is applied to the cost of the program.
Living abroad during your first semester enhances your global view, bringing a more worldly perspective to your future on-campus classes.
You can study abroad before becoming fully engrossed in your upper-level coursework and internship.
Traveling with a small group of fellow Colby-Sawyer classmates develops close friendships.
Freshmen will start their semester with classes and on-campus orientation beginning on August 22nd. Students will depart from Colby-Sawyer for their respective locations on September 1st and will return to the United States in early December. Spring semester will begin with a one-day on-campus orientation in mid January.
Our academic programs are fully accredited and will include Colby-Sawyer first-year classes taught by accompanying Colby-Sawyer professors.
No previous Italian or French language study is required, as students will have access to Rosetta Stone learning software.
All students should budget for $2,000 in additional discretionary travel and souvenir expenses.
