Learning Among Friends

My Colby-Sawyer Experience

“This encourages students to learn through critical thinking rather than just having me transmit information to them. They also learn how to work as a team, skills they'll use in work settings.” - Natural Sciences Professor Cheryl Coolidge

the academic experience

Colby-Sawyer students take an active role in designing their own education. They choose a theme-based interdisciplinary Pathway seminar in the first year. The program allows them to work together with a faculty member and a group of other first-year students to discuss and explore their own questions about the topic they have selected.

At the same time, students develop the writing, reading and thinking skills necessary for success in college and beyond. Over their four years, students create electronic portfolios, which record and demonstrate their learning and accomplishments over the course of their college careers.

Becoming an Active Learner

Students' academic experiences take place in small classes, studios, laboratories and in field settings in which they work closely with the faculty and staff who become their mentors. Through access to new information technologies and hands-on learning opportunities, such as internships, students emerge as active learners and confident scholars, artists, writers, scientists, critical thinkers and community leaders.

Finding Your Place in the Community

From their first day on campus, students are welcomed into a tightly knit community, and quickly find opportunities to grow and learn, through their fields of study, clubs, co-curricular activities, athletic and recreation programs, community service, and leadership programs. Each student is inspired to develop a unique voice and to find personal strengths and direction within a friendly, supportive and always challenging academic environment.

Building Skills, Confidence for Life

The Colby-Sawyer Experience is all about the process of becoming a strong, confident, active, and versatile liberally educated individual. It helps students to blend their academic and co-curricular activities, along with pre-professional training, into a seamless and personal educational experience that prepares them for advanced studies and satisfying lives and careers.
